Gunite Pools

Custom gunite pool design for Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, and the Hudson Valley, NY

A gunite pool is built and shaped on-site, using a steel-reinforced structure sprayed with a cement, sand, and water mixture. Coastal Pools & Spas designs gunite pools tailored to your lifestyle and landscape, with more flexibility in shape and size than a pre-formed shell allows.

What's Possible With a Gunite Pool

Because the shell is shaped on-site rather than pre-formed, gunite gives you more design freedom than fiberglass. Custom features we work with include:

Gunite vs. Other Pool Types

Gunite is one of a few common pool construction types, alongside fiberglass. Gunite is built and shaped on-site, which allows custom shapes and features but takes longer and needs periodic resurfacing over time. Fiberglass is a pre-formed shell that generally installs faster and needs less surface maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gunite pool made of?

Gunite is a mixture of cement, sand, and water that's sprayed onto a steel rebar framework, then shaped and finished on-site. This is different from fiberglass, which arrives as a single pre-formed shell.

Can a gunite pool be custom shaped?

Yes. Since the shell is built on-site rather than manufactured in a fixed mold, gunite allows more flexibility in shape, size, and custom features than fiberglass.

What features can be added to a gunite pool?

Common additions include waterfalls, grottos, and infinity edges on properties with the right grade. We go over feature options during the design consultation.

Do gunite pools need resurfacing?

Yes, over time. The interior finish wears gradually and typically needs resurfacing at some point during the pool's life. See our swimming pool resurfacing page for details.

What's the difference between gunite and fiberglass?

Gunite is built and shaped on-site, allowing more design flexibility but a longer timeline and periodic resurfacing. Fiberglass is a pre-formed shell that generally installs faster and needs less surface maintenance.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I reached out for a quote, and Alex stopped by that same week. He provided valuable insights and delivered a detailed estimate within a few days. After comparing multiple contractors, Alex's proposal stood out in both pricing and timeline, making it the best choice.

We decided to move forward with Coastal Pools and Spa, and from design and sketches to final touches—including the security fence for my kids—everything was handled with precision and care. Couldn't be happier with the results!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. From the initial consultation, my wife and I were so impressed with Alex, we discussed many different design ideas that we didn’t think were possible, he LISTENED to what our needs were instead of dictating the way “it should be” which is what many other contractors we interviewed said. Turns out it was the easier path to take for them but not the best for us.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We began this journey in April 2023 with a less-than-stellar pool contractor. After reversing course, we ended up hiring Coastal Pools based on a neighbor’s referral, that ended up being a fantastic experience. We appreciated Alex’s honest insight and assistance throughout our process and could not be more pleased with the professionalism of the team. After researching the various manufacturers of pools, it was clear that the design, engineering, and quality of a fiberglass pool from Coastal Pools is superior to the other options available in our area and carries the best long-term warranty. If you are thinking about putting in a fiberglass pool, I highly recommend Coastal Pools. They have been courteous, professional and responsive to all our questions and concerns.
